Blizzard’s ‘Overwatch Cinematic Story,’ Terry Crews and What’s Next?

April 26th, 2017 Candice Shane Features, Gaming, Video

Thankfully, Blizzard’s hit title Overwatch is still showing no signs of slowing down whatsoever! Thanks to GAMEOST, you can check out a large 40-minute compilation to catch you up with all of the amazing animated shorts Blizzard put together to get fans into the canon! This does beg the question though: What’s next?

One of the very fascinating things about Blizzard and their impressive finger-on-the-pulse with their fanbase is that they actually listen and pay attention to what fans want to see happen within the story. Sure, there are plenty of conversations about the gameplay and what characters need buffs/nerfs – but when it comes to the discussion about story, Blizzard seems to truly care about giving their players a large world to get involved with.

The game’s story and Blizzard’s quickness to bring more concept to the Overwatch world has even captured the interest of players who want to see celebrities brought in as established characters. Most notable is actor Terry Crews, who is a huge fan of the Blizzard title and who was mentioned as someone who would make a great Doomfist, and he took to the internet to agree. Blizzard swept up the Terry Crews hype and even invited him out to their studio campus for a tour but this just leads to further speculation on if Crews is actually going to take on the gauntlet. (Get it? Gauntlet? Doom.. fist? Nevermind.)

Now, Crews really wants this to happen and he even went on Yahoo! to do a mock-audition just to gather some more hype. When he put together a quick video talking about how he was headed to this year’s E3 Expo, the internet went crazy speculating that his announcement had something to do with Doomfist. This was thanks in part to Crews’ PC running Overwatch in the background, sending fans of the series into an absolute froth of excitement. However, Crews then made an announcement that his attendance had nothing to do with Overwatch but that’s not going to stop conspiracy theories from building.

Doomfist aside, it’s fascinating to look over the Blizzard cinematic universe for Overwatch and not want for more. It doesn’t just stop at these really well coordinated and produced animated shorts because Blizzard also releases free digital comics featuring the stories of their characters. There are presently 10 free digital comic books that flesh out even more of the canonical story that Blizzard has in mind for Overwatch and its future. Now, it’s anyone’s guess who the next character is. Data miners on the public test realm are always coming up with new concepts and theories for who our next character will be and quite often they’re very on-the-nose. With that said, Blizzard is incredible at knowing just the right time to make their announcements and maybe the upcoming E3 will give us gamers a taste for what is next for the Overwatch universe.
