For fans of the wild and wonderful works of both Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett, this past weekend was a long-awaited trip we’ve been waiting decades for: a filmed Good Omens adaptation is here, and it’s so good.
Gaiman and Pratchett’s collaboration on this beloved comedy/fantasy tome is the meeting of two greats of genre literature, a spectacular caper in which an angel and a demon who’s uneasy friendship has lasted thousands of years are suddenly tasked with assisting in bringing about the end of the world. And they don’t really want to, because you know… Earth is kind of fantastic. It’s a book so packed with smart references and laugh-out loud jokes, not to mention dozens of memorable characters, that adapting it for the screen presented a massive challenge for so long. For a while, Terry Gilliam wanted to make it as a feature film.
Eventually, however, the celestial sights aligned in some very specific ways: One, Gaiman decided to make Good Omens into a six-part TV miniseries rather than a movie, which lets this story breathe. Two, he decided to showrun the series himself, guided by notes he’d had from discussions with Pratchett before the latter’s untimely death in 2015. And lastly, on top of a truly amazing cast, they landed possibly the greatest leads we could have hoped for: Michael Sheen and David Tennant as the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, respectively. Fan favorites both, these two were born to play these roles, and their chemistry crackles through the entire six hours.
Anyway, enough of my blathering on about how Gaiman, director Doug McKinnon, the cast an all absolutely nailed this one – we’re here to share some GIFs! If you’re a book fan, celebrate with us! And if you haven’t, do watch Good Omens on Amazon Prime. (While you’re over there on Amazon, pick up the book, too.)
