As long as you’re not named Dee-Dee, you’ll probably be welcome in Dexter’s Laboratory. Since we’re featuring Dexter’s Laboratory in this November’s Loot Wear, we wanted to go over some lesser known things about this awesome 90’s cartoon! How much do you already know?
1. There is absolutely no mention, nor easter egg or even admittance from writers on what Dexter’s last name is!
2. In the awesome episode ‘Beard to be Feared’ you can see Fred Flintstone and George Jetson walking with Dexter on the sidewalk.
3. Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Dexter’s Lab, stated there are hints of Russian and some of his own backstory in the reasoning behind Dexter’s accented voice. People consistently asked him about it due to the fact Dexter’s parents have no accents whatsoever.
4. Like many of the Cartoon Cartoons series of original programming coming from Cartoon Networks CalArts ingenues, they followed a three-short formula. With two small episodes within one episode featuring a small short to fill in time between the mini-episodes.
5. Mandark, Dexter’s nemesis, was possibly always going to overcompensate with his devious plans. Why? His parents named him Susan. Yes. His first name is Susan thanks to his free-spirit parents who said it reminded them of the sound the wind makes. Poor Mandark.
6. Dexter has worn glasses since the day he was born, with that large noggin that doctors stated was due to his ‘obvious’ genius. Can you imagine wearing glasses from birth?
7. There is an episode of Dexter’s Laboratory where Dexter’s Mother has an OCD and germaphobia that explains why she wears those yellow gloves all of the time. Dexter’s Dad gave them to her as a coping mechanism. TOO REAL, GUYS!
8. Pony Puffs and Pretty Puff Ponies are inspired by My Little Pony, which are showcased in both Dexter’s Lab and The Powerpuff Girls. With only slight name changes, they utilized the same art and same voices.
9. If you’re wondering what a strong inspiration for the animation style and action-timing that Tartakovsky used, look no further than THIS cartoon entitled ‘The Dover Boys of Pimento University’ which is a Merry Melody cartoon from 1942!
10. One episode of Dexter’s Laboratory was ever pulled from airing and banned and it was due to a swear word and use of a rather uncouth for kids finger flipping. For shame, Dexter!
