‘Tis the season for hot cocoa, fireside stories, snowball fights, and ugly holiday sweaters (well, unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere)! Now’s the time to build up that holiday playlist. What else are you going to listen to while wrapping gifts (for your cat)?
What better way to celebrate the holidays than with a little bit of geeky flare? Here are some geeky holiday songs that are a must-have for your holiday playlist this year!
“What’s This?” (From “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas”) – Danny Elfman
You can never go wrong with a little Nightmare Before Christmas! But is it a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie? Who cares? Now it’s both! This Danny Elfman original is an absolute classic and it’s actually a crime that it doesn’t play on the radio. You also don’t want to miss the arrangement done by Fallout Boy, which is just as fun!
“Cool, Cool Mountain” (From Super Mario 64) – Koji Kondo
Here’s one for all you gamers! Who can forget the best level of Super Mario 64. Nothing beats the satisfaction of kicking that baby penguin off the side of the map. Cool, Cool Mountain was also home to the infamous icy slide where you race the (cheating) penguin to the bottom of the mountain. Some other good snowy Mario songs include “Frappe Snowland” from Mario Kart 64 and “Shiveria Town” from Super Mario Odyssey.
“Christmas Don’t Be Late” – Alvin and the Chipmunks
We know this one’s on the radio pretty often, but it’s a goodie! Nothing beats the good old Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoons. The Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas Special released almost exactly 37 years ago on December 14, 1981. It’s been that long, and they still want a hula hoop.
“That Time of Year” (From “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure”) – Josh Gad
This catchy tune is hitting its 1-year anniversary this year! Olaf sings as he searches for the perfect holiday tradition for his friends Anna and Elsa, and needless to say, hilarity ensues. If you’re feeling super ambitious you can also add the earbug that everyone loves so much, “Let It Go.”
“Jangle Bells” (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble) – Eveline Fischer and David Wise
Donkey Kong Country had some fantastic music. All of the composers for Rare games during this glorious era were absolute geniuses, and Eveline Fischer and David Wise are no exception. If you didn’t know, if you enter the code “Merry” into Donkey Kong Country 3, you unlock the Christmas-theme bonus games! In this mode, the music changes and all of the bananas turn into presents and ornaments!
“It Feels Like Christmas” (From The Muppets’ Christmas Carol)
Last, but not least, you can never have a holiday season without watching The Muppets Christmas Carol!” It feels like Christmas is sure to get stuck in your head and you’ll be singing it all day. Trust us. So get an extra shovel of coal for the fire and cozy up with some cocoa (and a pet!) and sing your heart out. You deserve it.
