Once upon a time, HBO’s Entourage took it upon themselves to joke about an Aquaman film… yet, here we are and Jason Momoa as Aquaman exceeded all expectations and was a box-office hit! We’re all fans but just how much do you know about our king of the seas?
1. Really good for us that this DCEU version of Aquaman doesn’t necessarily follow the early comics. Why? Because Aquaman couldn’t leave the water or else drying up would kill him! Think about the idea of being on land being your kryptonite! Yikes!
2. In fact, if you want to know which iteration this film is based on – look no further than the 2011 Geoff Johns run of Aquaman. He’s no weak lil’ merman and land isn’t a problem. Phew!
3. Interestingly enough, Patrick Wilson had already been a feature in the DCEU in Batman v. Superman as the President of the United States. Funny they thought we’d just FORGET when he came back as Ocean Master!

4. To make the underwater scenes look, well, like they were underwater – motion capture technology was used on the heads of the cast in order to computer generate perfectly billowing and floating hair in the ocean.
5. Aquaman is James Wan’s first superhero film! Intensely impressive that he came from his horror roots with the Insidious and Conjuring series and so hugely put his fingerprint on the DCEU!
6. It appears that Jason Momoa’s role in Stargate: Atlantis helped someone over at DC understand he would be the best King of the Sea ever – Producers have stated both that role and his presence in Game of Thrones solidified their casting pretty fast.

7. While we’re on the topic of Jason Momoa – It appears he’s also a prankster on set and loved setting up little light-hearted goofs for his castmates to stumble into. So, he’s big, tough and grizzled but a big ol’ silly teddy bear also? He doesn’t need to fuss with street cred – he’s got ocean cred.
8. Those underwater waterfalls aren’t just magical effects dreamed up by writers – it’s an actual thing with science behind it! Different temperatures of water flow at different rates and can make ice cold water from above shift into a waterfall into deeper warmer waters.
9. Tridents are typically only able to be wielded by Atlantean royalty – making only five people capable of wielding one at all. And here I just thought it was a wild ocean fork!

10. You can spot one of James Wan’s Annabelle (from The Conjuring) dolls somewhere in one of the scenes between Arthur and Mera. Think you can find it?
