Summer is here and the days of lounging on the couch watching TV have slowly crept their way into your life, right? Maybe on the weekends?
Whatever the case may be, this season is the best way to dig into all the television you may have missed during the fall and spring, as well as ready yourself to start on the smattering of shows that begin in summer. Here’s a list of shows, both brand-new and already aired, worth starting or catching up on this summer!
Game of Thrones
July is coming. Season 7 of HBO’s mega hit-show is almost upon us. Fans, myself included, are chomping at the bit for the episodes to hit the airwaves, further expanding on the overall storyline past where the books have gone at this point. Just what is Daenerys planning? How terrible can Cersei get? Will Sansa continue to be an absolute badass? Check out the trailer for what Season 7 has to offer! Season 7 begins airing on HBO July 16.
Marvel’s The Defenders
Fans of the work that Marvel and Netflix have been putting onto our television screens have been waiting for this moment – the miniseries when Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist join up and kick some badguy butts up and down the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. You still have plenty of time to watch all of the seasons of those individual characters’ shows before August 18 when The Defenders arrive on Netflix. Bring on the hallway fight scenes!
Sense8
I’ve only just recently begun to watch Sense8 as my regular shows have mostly ended for this season. Three episodes into the first season and I am completely enthralled. I admit I don’t have a clue what is going on quite yet, but I’m excited nonetheless. I am a little sad to hear of its recent cancellation, though if fans of the show have their way, I might have more to catch up on! A recently started petition to save the Netflix series has almost half a million signatures. That is a huge number! Nevertheless, I am excited to experience what this series has to offer, especially since talk around our office here at Loot Crate HQ makes me more and more excited to keep on watching!
Orphan Black
BBC’s Orphan Black returns to the air for its fifth and final season on June 10. If the trailers for this season are any indication, fans of the show are most definitely in for a ride. So why should you catch up on old seasons of Orphan Black before the new and final season starts? Simply put, I believe the odd, exciting, twist-filled, brilliantly acted show is one of the coolest on television and every moment audiences spend watching it is well worth it.
Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks recently made its way back to television on May 21, after being off the television airwaves for 25 years. The continuation of the series brings back many of the original cast, including Kyle MacLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee, Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook and more that fans might recognize. What should viewers expect from the new series? Not much was known before the first new episode aired and details are still secret – so catch up on the episodes on Showtime On Demand (also available as an add-on on Hulu and Amazon Prime), and watch the original series while you’re at it!
Rick and Morty
Wubba Lubba Dub Dub! There’s a chance you’ve heard someone utter this phrase from Rick and Morty at some point in the recent past. After all, it seems as though Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s brainchild is practically everywhere these days. If you haven’t caught on to the craze, Summer is a great time to catch up on all the episodes. The show’s recent April Fools prank of airing the first episode of Season 3 has fans excited for more. Join the club!
Wynonna Earp
This is another one that I’m catching up on late and with my luck, I started it at a good time. With the second season beginning on June 9, I have a few days more to catch up on the first season. So what exactly is Wynonna Earp? Think kick-ass Western combined with killing demons. Does that have your attention? It should. Castlevania
Fans of the Castlevania video game series have a right to be excited! Producer Adi Shankar has said in recent interviews regarding the show that “[the series is] going to be R-rated as f***,” and going to have a Game of Thrones vibe to the show and it’s written by no less than comics legend Warren Ellis. Netflix’s website lists the series as a four-part season, with each episode running for approximately 30 minutes. Castlevania is available to stream starting July 7!
DuckTales
Summer would not be complete without a little bit of nostalgia and a whole lot of feathers. I’m talking about the DuckTales reboot coming to Disney XD. I remember watching the original and definitely plan on watching this new one as an adult. How can you resist the charm that is David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck? Besides, we both know that you wanted to jump into that giant vault of money! (Premiere date is TBD.)
There you have it! This list may not have all the shows that are worthy of being watched and rewatched this summer, but it should give you a head start on some of my personal favorites and noteworthy shows. Who knows, they may end up as some your personal favorites as well!
