We’re a little less than two weeks away from the long-awaited Netflix team-up of Marvel’s street-level heroes, all of whom also turn up in our next Marvel Gear & Goods crate! And we thought a little music to get in the mood was a fine idea…
Now, there are a ton of directions we could have gone in to craft a Defenders playlist, but it seemed impossible not to take a cue from the rather excellent choice the creative team took to score all of the teasers and trailers to date with Nirvana’s “Come As You Are”; the grunge classic strikes a perfect thematic note for this particular, reluctant but promising team-up.
With that in mind, we used the Nirvana track as a jumping off point and what emerged is a mixtape deeply steeped in rock, hip hop and dance tracks that came out around the same time – the early-to-mid 1990’s – and the one uniting rule is, you can certainly kick ass to all of these tunes. There’s also a large representation here of artists who, like Matt, Jessica, Luke and Danny, hail from New York City. (Not all, though… I mean, Nirvana didn’t so we can’t make that a hard and fast rule!) The one exception to the 90’s theme, as it turns out, is the final track but in this case… well, no band sounds better on film than The Rolling Stones, and with “street fighting” in the title it was hard to resist. (“Plus, it’s just my favorite Stones track of all time. Deal with it!” – Ed.)
Now, without further delay, pop in your ear buds and crank up your MP3 player – or if you’re Iron Fist, your heavy-AF 1st Gen iPod (you’re rich, son, upgrade!) – and get ready to defend the crap outta this sucker…
