It’s Friday the 13th… In October… How could we not amp up the spoopiness and talk about some of the scariest video games we’ve ever played?
I walked around Loot Crate HQ to ask some of our most avid gamers this simple question: “What’s the most scared you have been playing a game?” The answers may not terrify you, but hopefully they will entertain you, and maybe give you some ideas of what kinds of spooky games you can try to get your hands on this Halloween season!
Wes Citti – Brand Manager, Loot Gaming: “Resident Evil 7 on PSVR: Nothing quite like screaming and blocking your face because your brain thinks you’re in real danger!”
JB: “Yeah, I didn’t have the guts to try it. The game was scary enough without it!”
Michael Petralia – Associate Creative Director, Loot Gaming: “I HATE SPOOPY GAMES! But the only scary game story I have is playing PT”
JB: “Oh man, PT made me pee my pants. Not literally, but like, almost.”
MP: “Same.”
JB: “So what happened? Did you get through the whole thing?”
MP: “Nowhere near!”
Ben Dunn – Associate Project Manager: “I love horror games! The MOST scared I have ever been would be the first time I played Five Nights at Freddy’s. The first time Foxy comes running at you…”
JB: “I didn’t know what to expect going into that, and for some reason, I didn’t even think it was a horror game the first time I loaded it up… That was a big mistake!”
Chris Darbro – Technical Director: “I don’t play horror games often, but I do have a few moments that left their mark. My first playthrough of Doom 3, I was dumb enough to play it in the dark with the lights off, headphones on, and no one else was home. Hell-spider jump scares aren’t something to mess around with!”
JB: “I’ll never forget my first time playing Doom 3, there’s a part early on when you’re like ‘oh hey, everything is fine, nothing wrong is happening here’, and a zombie dude jumps out at you from underneath some stairs. I launched my headphones off my head in pure terror – not my finest moment…”
Candice Shane – Lead Editor, The Daily Crate: “I actually get really into horror games. To a point where I used to import Super Famicom games so I could get into the original Clocktower. Scary ‘spoopy‘ games are my bread and butter. All of the Resident Evils, Alone in the Dark, D, Silent Hill and Fatal Frame games were on constant rotation. However, because I was just so used to horror games, I expected the worst. That was, until I played Clocktower 3. Clocktower 3 was one of the first PS2 games that set you on a path of being forever chased with actual no true way of defeating the bosses that chased you. Oh, and they ONLY had bosses! Terrifying music would crescendo and I would scream! I like to think that means I’ve got the ability to be scared but it takes a game where they rip all possible defenses away other than hiding for me to get really scared.”
JB: “I haven’t thought about the Clocktower series in forever! The first one troubled me, but I have to say, playing through the second one on PlayStation was one of the first games I couldn’t complete by myself. I remember playing it in broad daylight with my bedroom door open and I STILL struggled playing it.”
