There’s tons of games out there that we all know about that bring that creepy factor in video games. Heck, we get bombarded by tons of streamers and YouTubers all attempting to find the next scary game to spook out their audience now! But, what about some games you may have missed? Hardcore horror game fans need not apply!
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
This game has a pretty interesting story, and the problem is, the most scary part isn’t really about the story. Heck, it’s about how the story actually drags the player into it without even hinting that it will happen. I don’t want to spoil too much, but if you can get your hands on this game for the GameCube — you should. Sit down, turn the lights off and you and your friends will gawk and probably screech until your windows shatter.
Rule of Rose
Listen, this game isn’t for the faint of heart. Creepy orphans being found in a house by your character may lead you to believe you need to save them. Right? Or perhaps those orphans are tired of being told what to do and you’re in a world of trouble. This game didn’t sell incredibly well due to poor marketing and even more dicey issue where French government didn’t want the game sold as they felt it had inappropriate themes. However, these are just a slight part of an intensely tense and creepy story that makes this a damn fine title. Be prepared, the gameplay is PlayStation 2 era and thus it’s a bit wonky at times — but that story will have you and your friends biting each other’s nails in anticipation.
System Shock
One of the scariest things, to me, is the idea of waking up to find out some crazy intelligent AI has completely cored out your noggin as it knows you may be trying to destroy it. System Shock and System Shock 2 are by far some of the scariest cyberpunk-esque titles you can play. Since it came out in 1994, it has been given an enhanced edition that allows new players of this genre to get a peek in. Patience is a virtue though and a complete remake of this game is in the works for 2018 — hopefully ready by your next Halloween party! If you’ve got the time to spare, this game will get you and your friends hiding behind blankets and crying out that robots are the next obvious cause of our destruction.
Clocktower 3
Now, I had to close out with a game that still haunts me to this day. It takes a lot to freak me out in a game and I’ve played the above games with quite a bit of startle going on. For someone who grew up with survival horror and the typical horror games, going back as far as the late 80s, it takes a lot to get me creeped out. Now, that’s not the case with Clocktower 3. The third in the Clocktower series started in Japan back in the days of the Super Nintendo, Clocktower 3 deals with a girl who has the ability to help ghosts pass to the other side. This doesn’t go without it’s trouble though as the victims of vicious serial killers are stuck waiting in limbo until their murderers are gone. This lays in the hands of a young, rather fragile girl named Alyssa.
You play as Alyssa who has pretty much no means of protecting herself save for some holy water and lavender oils for… aromatherapy, I guess? You essentially must evade and trick these boss-type fiends into traps and scenarios until you find all the pieces to their gruesome scenarios. Then? Well, that’s when Alyssa’s true abilities show forth and you can send those slimeballs straight to hell. Get this game if you have friends who are squeamish about chases and hide-and-go-seek. They’re freaked out by Amnesia? Good, get this game and give it a whirl!
