Piranha Plant was recently released as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in Patch 2.0.0. As the first DLC character for the game, many were shocked when it was first announced out of left field. Now that Piranha Plant is finally here, players are starting to experiment to unlock this new character’s full potential.
It’s been less than a week, and Ultimate players are already coming up with crazy strategies that make Piranha Plant look like a pretty viable opponent in the competitive scene. Here’s a compilation of videos we found on Twitter of some amazing(ly trollish) Piranha Plant plays.
Hide ‘n’ Sneak

Lythero chomps Mega Man to oblivion by hiding in his poisonous smog and waiting for the perfect opportunity to stretch its neck out for a sneak attack. Hey, it ain’t cheap, it’s strategy! Note to self: if a Piranha Plant player hides in the smog, run.
The Shield Breaker

This Piranha Plant play is honestly not that hard to avoid if you know what’s coming, but could be useful against shield-happy players. The poisonous cloud proves well for breaking shields in a pinch! Curious how to avoid this? Tilt the control stick away from the poisonous cloud. *wink*
Toxic Edge Guarding
After playing a good amount of Piranha Plant, I decided to run a set! He's actually pretty scary ^^https://t.co/TzIs9iJ874 pic.twitter.com/BYWQLvQKJk

The dev team has put a lot of effort into making edge guarding as difficult as possible in Ultimate, but Piranha Plant could break that barrier… literally. Not only does it discourage the player from returning to the stage, but it also sets you up for an easy shield-breaking combo if they decide to test their fate!

Piranha Plant is rooted to the ground no more! He seems to be really good for aerial combos! Check out this nice combo against Captain Falcon, starting with a spike ball to get him vulnerable in the air, and followed up by a number of aerial juggles until he ultimately hits the blast zone.
Best Easter Egg Ever!
This is an amazing easter egg. If plant is crouching and you footstool it, it has a special instant attack pic.twitter.com/mnkxLO8rnM

This is a pretty awesome Easter Egg– if you crouch as Piranha Plant while another player tried to footstool jump off of you, Piranha Plant will automatically attack, just like in the original Super Mario Bros. games! This is really good to know if someone is really annoying you from above.

Piranha Plant seems a little too good to be true so far, so here’s a heavy does of reality! Villager has an all-mighty bug-catching net that negates one of Piranha Plant’s best long-range killing moves. The slow motion makes us wonder if Villager is just a magician.
