If you grew up in the 80’s or 90’s, you’ve seen adventure genre staple The Goonies. It’s as classic as they come. While its wisecracking characters, thrilling action sequences, and memorable one-liners are the heart of the movie, it also does a fantastic job of showcasing the wonders and horrors of 80’s fashion!
That’s right. Sweatpants, dolphin shorts, AND leg warmers. Maybe it was the fitness craze of the 80’s, but dolphin shorts over sweatpants was HIGHLY popular for men as well:
As 80’s as some of the outfits in the movie are, you really can’t get any more Classic Eighties than Corey Feldman wearing a Members Only Jacket over a Purple Rain tee.
Martha Plimpton’s character, Stef, also has an extremely 80s outfit, with both the classic belted-sweater look, and these extremely high-top Nike sneakers. (Which I want!)
For some fans, the costumes in this movie are so in line with the character’s personalities, it’s hard to imagine them wearing anything else. From Mikey’s double denim ensemble, to Andy’s cheer skirt and letterman sweater, everyone’s outfit is distinct and unique.
In fact, the outfits in The Goonies are so iconic, it’s not rare to see a group Halloween costume, or cosplay happening. You can even buy Goonies costumes from Halloween costume websites. (Mainly Chunk and Andy)
The lovable costumes from The Goonies are in part, owed to costume designer Richard La Motte, whose other credits include The Mask of Zorro and The Last of the Mohicans. Both of those are big-budget period films in which historical accuracy and style must be balanced expertly.
All I know is that if Richard La Motte is the man responsible for Chunk’s floral shirt/plaid pants combo, he’s a genius.
