If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush during this summer anime season, Fire Force may just become your newest obsession. This high action series from Soul Eater creator Atsushi Okubo focuses on a unique firefighting team tasked with handling the most dangerous fires known to man – spontaneously combusting humans known as Infernals.
Since losing his mother and younger brother in a blaze triggered by an Infernal, Shinra has vowed to become a hero and discover what is behind these cases of spontaneous combustion. Now that he is a member of Special Fire Force Company 8, he just might be able to do just that, all while helping to end the suffering of those unfortunate to turn.
Shinra is a third generation pyrokinetic; unlike second generations who can manipulate existing fire, third generations can create their own flames. His ability is focused in his feet and as such has been labeled “The Devil’s Footprints” alongside his nickname, Devil, for the nervous grin he just can’t seem to shake. This grants him incredible speed and power, allowing him to move quickly, land on his feet, and strike deadly blows with a single kick.
As Shinra works toward his goal of becoming a hero, he’ll find guidance from Battalion Commander Obi, a non-powered human who spends nearly every second of his free time training. The second generation pyrokinetic members of his team, Maki and Takehisa, are former members of the Tokyo army and have lots to teach the rookie, as well. Rounding out the squad is Sister Iris, one of the last living members of the Holy Sol Temple. She accompanies Company 8 to provide prayers for the Infernals and comfort to those who’ve lost loved ones.
New episodes of Fire Force stream Friday afternoons at 1:25pm Eastern on Crunchyroll (sub) and Funimation (dub), with the first two episodes already available for you to enjoy. If you prefer to read the manga, or can’t wait to see what happens next, sixteen volumes have been published by Kodansha.
