Attack on Titan fans, rejoice! We are only a month away from Season 3 and its whopping 24 new episodes…
Now, it has been a while since Season 2 wrapped and if your anime backlog is anything like mine, you may not have time to re-binge the series before it returns on July 22nd. You might also be one of the unlucky people (raises hand) who can’t catch the recap movie Roar of Awakening when Funimation shows it on July 10 & 11 in select theatres.
So here is Annette’s Five Minute AoT Recap! Caution: Contains spoilers. Proceed at your own risk.
Previously on Attack on Titan: Season 1
The somewhat peaceful lives of the inhabitants of Paradis’ walled city is interrupted when two Titans smash through a section of Wall Maria, causing people to flee for Wall Rose during the chaos. Youngsters Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman witness a Titan with a permanent smile on its face devour Eren’s mother. A year later, Eren and Mikasa, with their closest friend Armin Arlet, join the 104 Cadet Corps.
After years of training, Eren decides to join the Survey Corps division, with Mikasa and Armin doing the same. The Colossal Titan attacks the city again, and a new Titan appears, fighting on behalf of the humans. During the fight, Eren goes missing, only to reappear at the end of the fight when Eren emerges from the shell of the new Titan. Eren pleads his case to remain a member of the military and becomes part of Captain Levi’s squad.
A new Titan appears, a female who cannot be slain using the techniques drilled into their heads. The first attempt at capturing the Female fails as she calls out to other Titans in the area who swarm her body and devour it to keep them from discovering her identity. Meanwhile, Armin tests out his theory that the mole and the Female Titan are one and the same, leading to the season’s last major battle between Eren and Annie, member of the military police contingent.
In a post-credit scene we see a portion of the wall crumble away to reveal a Titan alive inside.
Previously on Attack on Titan: Season 2
The military and the Church butt heads over the Titan inside the wall. The Church knows more than it is willing to disclose. Hange, military scientist, determines that the crystallization process Titans perform is the material that compromises the walls. Eventually, Pastor Nick informs Hange that the key to everything lies with a young woman named Christa Lenz.
Meanwhile, Titans are spotted approaching from the south. Several scout detachments are currently outside of the wall. Sasha and Conny both rush toward their former homes to alert family. Conny finds a Titan trapped inside his old home munching on a human and is shocked to hear it speak “Welcome home.” He joins another group trapped in Castle Utgard which comes under attack by several smaller Titans commanded a Beast Titan. In order to save her dear friend Christa, Ymir reveals her identity as a Titan.
Reiner approaches Eren and reveals that he and Bertholdt are the Armored and Colossal Titans. Reiner wants Eren to willingly leave with him which would stop the waves of Titans threatening the city. Unfortunately, things go sideways and the three men take on their Titan forms to fight. The plan is to bring Eren and Ymir to the Titans’ hometown where they hope to convince Eren to join them. Mikasa, Christa, and other Scouts head for the forest where smaller Titans surround Eren and his group.
As the smaller Titans threaten the safety of his friends, Eren finds that he is not yet healed enough to transform. That’s when he and Mikasa come face to face once more with the Smiling Titan that ate his mother. Eren vows to protect her, a new power awakens within him, one that allows him to control other Titans. Using this, Eren sics the small Titans on the Smiling one and then after the Armored Titan. We learn from Ymir that Eren’s ability to control others must be why Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie wanted him so bad.
This season ends with the Beast Titan perched upon Wall Maria and a mysterious blonde haired man standing behind him.
Phew! That was a mouthful, wasn’t it? But hopefully my quick recap helped trigger your memory. If not, maybe you need to plan a weekend binge-a-thon and revisit all 37 Attack on Titan episodes. I’m already making my shopping list for mine: boxes of Pocky, a few Cup Noodles, and a restock on my Hi-Chew supply.
