Loot Wear is teaming up with female artists throughout geekdom to design and curate for our Loot for Her line. We’re calling this program “For Her, By Her“! Each month we’ll bring you a one on one with each artist we collaborated with, making unique apparel designed by talented women in the field.
This month we bring you star artist Asunción Macián Ruiz! Asunción designed our Alita: Battle Angel item for us this month!
It’s been a while since we’ve last spoken with you! What new things do you have going on in the pipeline?
I’m working on several commissions now, and I have planned to focus on my personal work this year. A couple of projects with a friend, a witches calendar, new pins, a tarot.
Have you learned any new skill sets since the last time we spoke with you?
Yes, I feel I’m always learning new stuff. Sometimes I get stuck because I feel clumsy and bad at work, but then I start working and all goes smooth as always, and I can recognize my own work improvement.
If you attended Hogwarts, what house would you be sorted into?
I guess Slytherin would be a good fit for me. Lol!
If you had a choice between being any fantasy character, what would you be?
A mermaid would be cool, or some evil witch from a fairy tale.
What new movies are shows are you really into right now?
Brooklyn 99 (I need a good dose of laugh lately tbh), Punisher (I need some dose of badassery as well) and Outlander (I need some dose of Jamie Fraser always). About movies: I’m looking forward to watch Glass and Alita: Battle Angel, really.
This month you’ve designed an Alita: Battle Angel item for us! Have you read the manga or watched the anime?
I’ve read the manga many years ago. It brings me very cherished memories. The comics belonged to my best friend, Ximo, and it reminds me when we were flatmates back in the days and we behaved like teenager monkeys. I remember the feeling of reading something very badass, sweet and though at once. Alita was strong and vulnerable. When you grow up that makes so much sense.
What was your favorite part about coming up with this design?
To jump out my comfort zone. I fancy filigrees and engraved ornaments, also I love costume design. It was a challenging to translate the body design to leggings. They really outdid themselves with the Alita’s body design, it’s like porcelain, I love it.
Can you tell us a little about the design process behind your item?
I planned several sizes and made the design into floating pieces (as layers) so I could adjust later the pieces to look good on all sizes. Then I started to color and to draw the filigrees. It was pretty technical and geometric it was so challenging but I’m so proud of it.
Tell us an interesting fact about you!
I avoid crowds and live in a house in the countryside with my husband and 3 cats. I love astronomy, photography and to craft stuff.
Do you have any words of inspiration for other women looking to go into your field?
Hang in there. It gets better. There’s no art you can’t do, no style you can’t practice.
