It’s nearly summer blockbuster season, and if you haven’t already seen Avengers Endgame for the sixth time, there will be more big titles to trek out to your multiplex for soon! Although, some nights you just wanna stay in and hit the sofa, so we’ve got more recs for you that are available from the most popular streaming services – sometimes, they even intersect with the franchises we feature!
We want to give you a round-up regularly of some of the best you can stream to compliment your loot when it arrives, and this month we’re checking out the titles in our SHOWDOWN theme, which you should be receiving soon and including these faves across Loot Crate, Loot Crate DX and Loot Wear from April!
The Avengers
Okay, so all those Endgame screenings hasn’t quenched your thirst for all things Avengers yet… where can you stream more of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Well, as we all know, Disney+ launches in November and it’s going to be the exclusive streaming home of MCU films moving forward. Meaning now is a great time to watch the ones still featured on Netflix: Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ant-Man & The Wasp, Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok. Also, if you want some comics-adjacent goodness, there are two animated Marvel features worth checking out on Netflix, Doctor Strange and Planet Hulk!
Godzilla
The King of the Monsters is back this month, and we’re as pumped as you are for the latest upcoming Godzilla feature hitting theatres in June! If you want to get your stream on as you wait for his return (and the current-franchise debuts of Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra!), then outside of renting some previous Godzilla flicks, the pickings are a little slim. The 2014 version (see above) as well as the awful 1998 one are streamable on demand if you have Hulu‘s Live TV option; meanwhile if you wanna go the anime route, there are three quite good Godzilla features currently on Netflix, subtitled Planet of the Monsters, City on the Edge of Battle and The Planet Eater.
Deadpool
If you want to dip your tootsies into the Deadpool….er, pool this month, you really are in the pole position for streaming if you’ve got a subscription to HBO Now (or HBO Go). Be sure to click on the listing for Deadpool 2, and look in the place where they usually display separate episodes of shows or behind the scenes extras: Yup, HBO has all three different versions of the Ryan Reynolds-starring sequel available to stream! There’s the theatrical version, plus the unrated “Super Duper Cut” (definitely make sure the kids are in bed before watching that one); and of course, Once Upon A Deadpool, the absolutely hilarious PG-13 version in which Wade kidnaps Fred Savage, forcing him to re-enact the bedtime story framing scenes from The Princess Bride in order to tell a “sweeter” version of his tale. Yeah, it’s GREAT, don’t miss it, these all leave the channel on June 2nd!
The Karate Kid
We’ll get the important stuff out of the way first: If you are even remotely a Karate Kid fan, you need to see Cobra Kai. YouTube Premium programming still being somewhat limited, $11.99 might seem like a lot to shell out just for one show but we guarantee it’s worth it; what seemed at first like it might be a fun nostalgia trip has developed into an incredibly nuanced show about legacies and what true honor means, with William Zabka and Ralph Macchio better than ever in front of a great teen cast. (p.s. if you’re willing to wait, YT is making the whole first two seasons FREE for a limited time in September!) In the meantime, you can rent all of the original Karate Kid films (yep, even The Next Karate Kid with Hilary Swank) on Amazon Prime; if you’re super curious, you could watch the Jackie Chan/Jaden Smith remake on STARZ, but don’t expect too much.
