The goal of most inmates, no matter the prison, is to survive. In the case of Ganta Igarashi, not only does he want to survive his sentence in Deadman Wonderland, he also hopes to one day prove his innocence.
Deadman Wonderland’s story is dark and horrific. This prison serves two purposes: the incarceration of felons, and using these inmates to entertain and run the amusement park. But there is something else happening here, something far more sinister and dangerous to mankind.
Ganta has been wrongly accused of murdering his entire middle school class, purely on the grounds that he was the only survivor. In reality, a figure he calls the Red Man appeared and slaughtered them all. This person also embedded a red crystal into his body. After a sham trial, Ganta’s sent to Deadman Wonderland, the only privately owned prison in Japan. It is here that he discovers his ability to manipulate his blood during his quest to find the mysterious Red Man and clear his name.
Of all the prisoners trying to survive in Deadman Wonderland, Ganta seems most intrigued by the childlike Shiro. Shiro has no inmate number and seems to have free run of the prison. When Ganta is in danger, Shiro seems to know he needs her help. And something about her seems awful familiar…
In time Ganta learns that the red crystal has given him something called a Branch of Sin. In his case, he can use the blood in his body to create bullets and this becomes known as the Ganta Gun. Some of the answers he’s been searching for might be located in the G Block, a secret level where experiments on Deadmen with similar abilities are studied and compete to stay out of the operating room.
Unfortunately for fans, Deadman Wonderland only saw one season of its anime adaptation, but the manga has ended and is still in print. So if you find yourself in love with this action packed show and its blood-based weaponry, fear not! You can hit up your favourite bookseller and binge on the series.
