Music Recs: ‘Tis the Season for Holiday Covers!

It’s that time of the year: the Holidays. Some people started putting up Christmas decorations in October (don’t be that person, please) while others were counting days until they could pull out their collection of ugly sweaters, one for each holiday party invite received.

A staple part of the holiday season is also the music. You can’t go to a shopping mall, coffee shop, or even turn on the radio without the possibility of hearing a holiday jingle that will be stuck in your head for ages. While there are plenty of classic versions of these songs, it’s always a treat to take a look at some of the covers and originals created throughout the years. So we thought why not bring you a list of some covers and originals that you can tap your toes to while celebrating the holiday of your choice this year!

 

“Last Christmas” by Jimmy Eat World

Originally performed by the UK pop duo Wham!, there have been many different covers of “Last Christmas” through the years. Ranging from a myriad of pop stars to even the Crazy Frog, the version from Arizona rock band Jimmy Eat World is a personal favorite. Press play and have a nice long sip of hot chocolate. It’ll make you feel the Christmas spirit.

 

My December” by Linkin Park

While not specifically mentioning anything about the holiday season, you can hear this tune on the radio rotations more during this time of year. Though, it’s good to hear any time of the year.

 

“Sleigh Ride” by Relient K

Without automatically loving the adorable music video that goes hand in hand with the song, you can also listen to an entire album full of Christmas jams from Relient K. Need a fix of not your typical musical arrangements? You’ll find them there.

 

“All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey

This one tops lists year after year when it comes to talking about holiday music. We couldn’t leave it out of the list because of how catchy it is. And since we aren’t doing this list numerically, it’s going here!

 

“Little Saint Nick” by the Beach Boys

The holidays aren’t the same without a little bit of Santa Claus, correct? Now you can get your fix with the classic sounds of the Beach Boys.

 

“Good King Wenceslas” as performed by William Shatner

Created in 1853, the song “Good King Wenceslas” might be the oldest one on our list. While it isn’t one that may be widely known these days, it’s a definite holiday tune. Plus, the version here is sung by William Shatner, it becomes a song we have to include on this list.

 

“What’s This” from The Nightmare Before Christmas

Is it Halloween or Christmas? The debate around Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas will probably continue to occur year after year, but the moment that Jack Skellington first witnesses snow and the idea of Christmas is a moment that we would be sorry to not include.

 

The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) by Alvin and the Chipmunks

The Chipmunks are classic. The voices of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore crooning out the lyrics to their Christmas jingle are hard to forget. Besides, they really want that Hula Hoop.

 

“Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer” by DMX

Just when you least expected it…DMX and Rudolf. Let your ears soak it in.
