The Sonic the Hedgehog series is full of colorful, charming, and… edgy characters. The Sonic team tries to cram as many as they possibly can into their games as often as possible, but we want to see more of these characters than just cameos and one-offs!
We’ve seen some Sonic spin-offs in the past, such as Tails Adventure, Shadow the Hedgehog and Knuckles’ Chaotix, which star Tails, Shadow, and Knuckles respectively. All have been interesting games in their own right. As such, each holds its own in Sonic’s history. We’re not saying that we don’t love the blue blur – we just think some of his friends should have some spotlight. Mario graciously shares some screen-time with his friends Wario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Luigi, whom all have multiple of their own titles (and because of this, some have gone on to become long-lasting franchises). Here is a list of Sonic characters who should be given the chance to star in their own spin-off titles.
Amy Rose
Amy Rose is an… interesting character, to say the least, but she definitely has her fans! The most amiable thing about Amy is her ability to break the mold when it comes to “damsel in destress” stereotype. In fact, it’s usually Sonic who needs saving (from her). She’s proven that she can hold her own in multiple Sonic the Hedgehog games, where she wields her Piko Piko Hammer as a weapon. While Amy Rose isn’t technically Sonic’s girlfriend, she unofficially dubs herself as such on multiple occasions, and we could see a game centering around her going on an adventure to save Sonic from some unknown, evil force. She could totally team up with her friends Cream the Rabbit and Big the Cat, as they seem to share a sort of sibling relationship ever since their team-up in Sonic Heroes.
Big the Cat
Speaking of Big the Cat, this meme-worthy boi needs his own series. Big may seem like a scary fighter, but don’t judge a book by its cover! He is actually very charming and easy-going fellow. Think Baloo the bear, but sort of dumb and innocent. He prefers relaxing with his best friend Froggy (who he ends up losing a lot of the time). To keep the peaceful nature of this beast, we could totally see a casual puzzle game starring Big the Cat and Froggy. Heck, make the Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure a standalone game starring the Chao caretaker, Big the Cat! You know you’d play the heck out of that. We’d be lying if we said we wouldn’t!
Mighty and Ray
Mighty and Ray are enigmatic in such a way that their existence in the Sonic universe is varied and split between many “versions” of themselves. It’s a complicated story for another time. Anyway, both have been revived from the grave to star in Sonic Mania as DLC characters! On top of that, they have a few charming cartoon episodes (along with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) that really display their bromance.
In essence, Ray the Flying Squirrel is very similar to Tails in that he can spin, float, etc., but Ray can also pick stuff up with his tail! Mighty the Armadillo, who is Ray’s best friend, is similar to Knuckles (super strength), but his shell also blocks a lot of incoming damage (sans fire-based attacks). As a team, this duo can do a lot and bring fun mechanics to the table that other Sonic characters cannot. We’d love to see these two team up on a solo adventure!
Silver the Hedgehog
Let’s be real here. Silver the Hedgehog was never given the chance to really show his true colors. Having his first appearance be in the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), many people write off Silver as uninspired. We’re here to tell you that Silver is more than just edgy Sonic (Shadow’s already got that covered)! Silver actually has some pretty legit psychokinesis powers, which basically means he can move things with his mind. Being from the future, Silver’s story has the potential to expand the Sonic universe and take it in a completely unique direction to places we haven’t seen and meet characters we’ve never met. Plus, he has his bestie, Blaze the Cat, who should most definitely come along for the adventure.
Team Chaotix
And last, but certainly not least, we have Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy Bee, a.k.a. Team Chaotix. This team of very diverse personalities have their own detective agency, and that by itself sounds like a great spin-off already. This goofy trio could have their own story-heavy game that revolves around some sort of mystery that they’re hired to investigate, but still plays like traditional 3D Sonic games. Each character brings something unique to the table: Vector packs a powerful punch and is a great swimmer, Espio practices ninjutsu and can camouflage himself, and Charmy can fly and has a powerful stinger. With these three leading their own game, the play style options would make fresh puzzle platforming game! Also, the trio originally appeared in Knuckles’ Chaotix with Mighty the Armadillo. Maybe Mighty can make a cameo?
