Every year April Fools walks a fine line between a fun day for goofs and a malicious day for hurtful lies. Some of the so-called “PRANKS” that I’m going to bring up today are truly cruel, mostly because I want them to be real.
Zelda Art Swap
Let me give this some backstory. The Wind Waker is one of the most controversial Zelda games, specifically because of the art style used. People had seen images of Twilight Princess and were not impressed by the light-hearted, cartoony spirit of The Wind Waker. In 2005, Electronic Gaming Monthly took this knowledge and spun it. They released an article about a NEW version of The Wind Waker in the grittier art style of Twilight Princess. I’d like to call out my favorite quote from the article – “The ever-popular elf will be traveling the ocean blue in search of his little sis…” Amazing.
World of Foodcraft
This one makes me want to cry. Pandaren Xpress was Blizzard’s 2005 April Fools joke in which they pretended that players would be able to order ACTUAL FOOD inside World of Warcraft. I know this might make me sound lazy, but I genuinely love this idea and would use it in a heart-beat.
Game Launcher Launcher
In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except every year there will be new game launchers and streaming platforms. Last year, Corsair made fun of this with the amazing video above. In it, they announce a Game Launcher Launcher, a lifechanging product that links all your launchers into one additional launcher. I’m glad this one isn’t real, but I will admit, I thought it was an okay idea for a second.
Emotional Support Garrus
This is my all-time favorite April Fools joke. In 2014, Mass Effect released images of a Garrus body pillow as a prank. That could’ve been the end of it, BUT last year on April Fools, Mass Effect answered our prayers and made this pillow a reality. Yeah. They made an actual Garrus body pillow that people bought.
Hole Lot of Trouble
Now here’s an April Fools joke you can act on. If you want to play an evil trick on your friends, hop onto Animal Crossing: New Horizons get this handy hole design pattern and drop it all over their island. Chaos reigns.
