Over the show’s thirteen seasons, Supernatural has provided the daunting task of bringing to light creatures that scares the audiences as well as keeping the show true to its beginnings: “saving people, hunting things: the family business.”
We here at the Daily Crate have compiled a short list of the many creatures that have been showcased on the myriad of episodes, in honor of the Halloween season, that rightfully scared us upon first and any repeat viewings.
Vengeful Spirits
Supernatural has never been lacking in the Vengeful Spirits department. It seems as though the duo of Sam and Dean Winchester have come across countless instances of these spirits out to cause havoc and trouble. They are called vengeful for a reason! One of the spookiest spirits appeared in the very first season in an episode called “Dead in the Water.” No one likes dealing with bodies mysteriously disappearing in a lake, only to never be recovered, right? To turn up the creepy factor, in this episode the vengeful spirit is a child. Children, dark and spooky lakes, and being pulled under water against your will? See, this is just plain spooky, which is why we count the Vengeful Spirit as one of the creatures on this list!
Hold Nickar
Tis the season to be scary! While not quite the Christmas season yet, there is always a time during Halloween to talk about the possibility of the holidays in general scaring the heck out of us. That is where the wonderful Hold Nickar comes in. In the episode aptly titled “A Very Supernatural Christmas,” the Winchester boys face off against the Hold Nickar, god of the Winter Solstice. What does the god want? Oh you know, only the finest sacrifice of fresh meat. There’s nothing quite like celebrating the holiday season only to end up being eaten by a Pagan god.
The creative team behind this episode wanted to create something akin to a Christmas special but with the Supernatural touch to it. Instead of creating an anti-Santa Claus, they decided to go with the root of the holiday, which can be traced back to its Pagan origins. So as the holiday season draws nearer and nearer, don’t forget: not all holiday creatures can be jolly!
Leviathan
Imagine a creature so powerful, so clever, and so hungry that even God went and locked them up so they could not eat everything in their path? You’ve got a Leviathan. Within the realm of Supernatural lore, the Leviathans “also called the Old Ones, were primordial creatures from the sea, that through evolution, became able to possess other creatures to survive on land. Leviathans pre-date the creation of humans and angels, as well as the soul itself. They would also pre-date any beings with souls […] and are the First Beasts that were created by God, preceding many of his other creations. “
The CW
The representation of the Leviathans on the show were downright terrifying, as you can see the in the .gif above. Giant teeth are not the way that anyone wants to go by! On top of that, the Leviathan in the show had a ridiculous amount of power and influence over the world, which they saw as their food source. Thankfully these creatures are only real within the confines of the show or we’d be toast (and not the delicious kind of toast!)
Tulpa
Imagine thinking about something with such concentration that it actual is created and becomes lifelike. Now think about the potential for that to go horribly awry and be a bad thing. What you might be thinking of is a Tulpa. A Tulpa is a term to describe a being or object created through spiritual or mental powers. In the case of Supernatural, a legend was created in the episode “Hell House” of Mordechai Murdoch, a farmer who killed his daughters to spare them starving in the Great Depression. Because the legend picked up speed from inquiring minds, a Tulpa was formed and Murdoch became something real and something quite terrifying, as it preyed on people.
While the Tulpa was taken care of in the show with some quick thinking and fire, it’s still quite creepy to consider the idea. In this day and age, with all of the thoughts and ideas that spread around on social media, you never know what could potentially be created and what terror that creation may cause!
Croatoan Virus
In this writer’s opinion, the Croatoan is probably the most frightening entity on this list. Imagine a virus that, once infecting you, sends you into a murderous rage. The thing is, you don’t know who is infected until they ultimately turn on you. Then, in the end…everyone just straight up disappears. The thought is a bit terrifying, especially because there would be so much potential rage and damage, only to have it all just gone in the blink of an eye. This is what occurs in the aptly titled episode, “Croatoan.” If you haven’t seen an episode of Supernatural, this could be one to jump in on. There may be some plot points you might not fully grasp, but the eeriness of the episode is a great mood setter.
