So, Venom is coming before you know it and that film has all of us major Spider-Man and Co. fans so curious! Venom getting his own movie means that maybe we’ll see more of the Symbiotes and if that’s the case, well, just who will we possibly see? Let’s get into it!
Now, if you want to follow along with some of my thoughts and where I’m getting some of this — check out the trailer below if you have not already seen it. I’m definitely not the only one theorizing about all this, so take everything I say with a grain of salt and also, well, they’re just theories. For all we know, this red yard I have tacked to my wall is for nothing!
The Comic Book Connections: Venom: Lethal Protector and The Spectacular Spider-Man: Planet of the Symbiotes
Now, this isn’t a theory. During a Comic-Con event, the director of the upcoming film Ruben Fleischer, stated that the films revolve around both of these comic book series. With Lethal Protector being six issues and Planet of the Symbiotes being a five issue run, there’s plenty to work with creatively. This gives us backstory to Eddie Brock as well as establish the other symbiotes, where they come from and just why they’re no good for the world in general.
In the trailer, we get mere glimpses of every day folks who are seemingly tested on or are exposed to the Symbiotes while they’re searching for these canisters. Check out the color though. The symbiote that latches onto Brock has always been seen as black but there are other symbiotes of other color schemes that show their typical sheen. What does this mean? Possibly nothing, but there IS a symbiote named Phage that has a golden yellow hue.
It’s also possible this could be the symbiote for not Phage but Scream, which also has a yellow hue to it. Are these the only symbiotes we see? Nope! Not in the slightest. Here, check out this panel from Lethal Protector in which Spider-Man is a bit caught off guard by the amount of symbiotes when he assumed there was only Venom. You’ll see Phage and Scream, Scream being the female golden symbiote of the two.
During the trailer, a woman shows being swallowed up by a symbiote which then gives her a rather impressive set of Astro-Pop angry pointy-hands. While it’s just a theory, a lot of us are assuming that could be Agony. If this movie is to follow Eddie Brock as he figures out about the symbiotes that give him Venom, are we to assume that we’ll also learn about the other Symbiotes and who they attach themselves to?
We know, based on the scene in the trailer that one such symbiote has Riot-like appearance based on his massive swinging reaper scythe arms and Riot has been confirmed for the film. If the film is focusing on the initial five from Planet of the Symbiotes, we can also expect Lasher. What about Carnage? While not featured in Planet of the Symbiotes, he IS in Venom: Lethal Protector. With not a teaser moment or leak to be seen, we do know it’s happening eventually as it was confirmed. We’ve got zero idea of when/if Carnage will be involved in the film as a surprise later in the film OR if this is the teaser moment that we may see at the end of the movie. No idea.
With all of that in mind, the tagline is impressive and something to note: The World Has Enough Superheroes. Have we seen a film that has been solely about villains and not just one but several? Venom promises a LOT of interesting surprises and I can’t wait to see just what symbiotes we’re going to meet finally on the silver screen for the first time!
