The Exorcist, Annabelle, Halloween, all movies we know and love but aren’t you tired of the basic, everyday horror films? I mean come on, if I hear one more thing about The Shining I am going to let Johnny kill me himself. Well, you’re in luck! Because I am awesome and have spent some time digging for you. So here it is: some of the most disturbing horror movies that you’ve probably never heard of.
Audition オーディション(1999)
Being a weeb myself, I love all things Japanese…well… except for this. In this movie a widower takes and offer to screen girls at a special audition, (hence the name) arranged by a friend in order to find him a new wife. Little does he know the one that he fancies is not who she appears to be after all. Like gross, disgusting, insane horror films? This one is for you.
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Ever wanted to visit a luscious, green jungle, away from the worries of life? You won’t after watching this movie. During a rescue mission into the amazon rainforest, a professor stumbles across lost film shot by a “missing” documentary crew. Apparently this movie was so gruesome that the movie industry did some investigating after to the fact to make sure none of the actors were really injured.
Suspiria (2018)
Anyone remember taking ballet lessons as a kid? “A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.”
Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Probably the most well recognized and oldest film on the list is this disturbing thriller. A young couple moves in to an apartment only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life. It doesn’t get any better from there.
The Grudge (2004)
I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer growing up! Too bad Sarah Michelle Gellar is nothing like Buffy in this film(no offense). An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Jessika, people have definitely heard of The Grudge, but I’m leaving it in to prove my point. 🙂 -Tyler]
Martyrs (2008)
Alright maybe I said this about all of them but this one is really freaking scary. A young woman’s quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity. Talk about holding a grudge…
Rec (2007)
This one is last on the list and for good reason. For you have read along this far, this is a special treat for you. Simply put, this horror film is about a television reporter and cameraman who follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying. This movie gets me with the noises and shrieks…
Well good luck getting some sleep after that list. Have any disturbing horror films I might have missed? Be sure and let us know on Twitter!
See you guys next week!
