There are many incredible heroes in the Marvel universe, and in our next Marvel Gear & Goods crate, we’re shining a light on the ladies who take the lead…
There have always been amazing female characters in Marvel’s comics history, though in the past 30 years or so we’ve definitely seen a stronger contingent of amazing characters and storylines come to the fore. My own gateway to Marvel comics obsession started in the 80’s with Chris Claremont’s run of X-Men, which delivered so much rich storytelling to the women of that title’s lore that it made a life-long fan out of me, and over the years the expansion of expansive, inclusive storytelling has grown in spectacular ways. To celebrate Marvel Gear & Goods’ latest theme, we wanted to get some great inspirational words to describe just why we’re so excited for this upcoming crate, so we went straight to the source. Here now are some of the amazing ladies who work for Marvel, describing what they makes their fandom hearts sing about the leading ladies we love!…
Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk) is a monster of a woman in the best ways possible, having battled not just with the bad guys, but with her own personal identity and self-confidence. She forged her own path to discovering her strength and worth – not just in her muscly gamma-ray infused form, but through her intelligence, problem-solving capabilities, and wit – and acts as a reminder to see and embrace the value in all sides of yourself, even when you’re feeling outnumbered by life (and even, you know, your deadly enemies). We all have that savage, confident, and unapologetically bold She-Hulk inside of us, just like Jennifer Walters – you just gotta let her out. – Adri Cowan (@adricowan), Social Media Manager
Doreen Allene Green, what can I say? She’s part girl, part squirrel; she kicks butts and eats nuts while solving complex computer equations! But seriously, Doreen’s sense of humor, snark, and undying desire to be a team player make her the perfect combination of Super Hero and best friend goals; sorry Tippy-Toe. As a kid, Doreen always knew she was different. I mean, it’s not every day that you discover that you can communicate with squirrels. At that point, she could have chosen to be anything or do anything but she was determined to fight crime alongside her own personal heroes. Even if those heroes are unresponsive – she keeps fighting. And, no matter how big the obstacle or how powerful the villain, she just doesn’t give up and she never leaves a friend behind. – Angélique Roché (@AngeliqueRoche), Marvel’s Voices
Janet Van Dyne or as you may know her – The Wasp – is one of the most impressive characters in comic book history. Though she is tiny, she is fierce! Sure, her sting is very powerful, but she packs an even greater punch as a leader. She was even the first female chairman of the Avengers, as one of the most respected and levelheaded leaders of the team. What’s more, Janet has proved a caring guardian to her stepdaughter Nadia Van Dyne, the Unstoppable Wasp, as well as a true philanthropist to her scientific research. Janet is proof that women can help future generations of female-identifying Super Heroes grow and succeed. We should all be a leader with empathy and heart as mighty as The Wasp. – Lorraine Cink (@lorrainecink), Earth’s Mightiest Show
Carol Danvers is a true Super Hero in both her strength and as a role model for women everywhere. Throughout her fifty years of history, first as Ms. Marvel and now as Captain Marvel, Carol has overcame endless challenges and hardships, punching back literally and figuratively, to come out stronger and victorious. Again and again, I’ve fallen in love with the person Carol has become: fierce, independent and fearless. She truly is a hero for everyone. – Judy Stephens (@OMG_Dj_Judy), Women of Marvel
Spider-Gwen has been such an amazing (haha, get it?) discovery for me because it combines two things that I love in storytelling: Spider-Man and second chances. I always wished that Gwen Stacy had the time to get a bigger story of her own – and now, she gets to be the hero! Watching Gwen Stacy of all people take on the great power and great responsibility of Spider-Woman brings me such joy, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. Plus we seem to share a love for black Converse sneakers, so I definitely feel a kinship. – Jamie Frevele (@jamiefrevele ), This Week in Marvel
