Cosplaying isn’t only for humans. Pets can cosplay too! Check out what Fawkes, Pike and Ruby’s parents had to say about what it’s like to have cosplaying pets. ? ? ?
Give us a bit of history on Fawkes, Pike and Ruby. How did they become a part of your family?
Fawkes was Adopted about 12 years ago to give Nak (our cat back then) and us some companionship. He was the runt of a litter at the shelter and when I opened the cage he ran up into my arms and climbed onto my shoulder purring loudly and meowing insistently. He’s still the most talkative pet I’ve ever accompanied in life.
A few years ago Nak passed and we found Pike after a long search for someone to help fill that void. Pike was a shy girl at a vets office who had just survived feline distemper as a kitten. She was born a stray and was very wary of people. But she instantly bonded towards Fawkes, who had been depressed since Nak’s departure. It’s been a long loving process socializing her as she’s been growing up the last few years.
Ruby has been with my Wife for 21 years now since he was less than a foot long little noodle. My wife was 15 and he was a gift from her father.
When did you start cosplaying with them?
Way back in the early 2000’s we performed at Renaissance Faires with Nak in costume. After doing that for so long we decided to try some more pop culture relevant costumes on the internet in 2014 and it kind of took off.
What is your process when putting a cosplay together?
We have some base patterns for the cats form. So mainly it’s figuring out what to edit so that a costume fits comfortably while still maintaining the character they are portraying.
What’s the most difficult thing about cosplaying for your pets?
Editing costumes based on wide chested broad shouldered humans to pets with no shoulders and compact chest areas. *laugh*
What characters have you’ve done so far?
Oh… we’re into the 2-300’s at this point. From TV shows to movies. Comic book characters (and covers!) and Videogames.
What has been your favorite cosplay to put together?
I do enjoy the functional armor builds where we’ve put together real armor that works for cats based on characters like Jon Snow, Vax’ildan, Link, Hiccup. But some of our Borderlands builds the paint job just makes them spectacular.
What are some future cosplays you’d like to do?
Toooo many to name. But I’m hoping to do the Witcher Armor in the future.
