Horror video games are tough stuff for a lot of folks, but if you’ve got a friend? Well, it makes the situations and the scares less terrifying and all the more fun. Here’s a few indie horror games that let you slay it with friends!
Now, I’m including a few games in here that you can play with multiple friends and not just one other. This means you’ve got all the experiences you can shake a stick at and with summertime upon us, it means you can leave all the windows and doors open and turn out the lights. More scares = More fun.
Pacify | Shawn Hitchcock Games – $4.99 on Steam
A good solid 2-4 player campaign co-op isn’t easy to find in the horror genre. Typically, this is because designers want to keep the game feeling solitary which aids in the scare-factor. Pacify is a different beast though as it amps up the drama of navigating the house by turning the instances of chase up a notch. This doesn’t mean you’re safe if you play solo, mind you, it just means it’s the best if you bring your pals along. A low indie price to this game means with $20, you can give your friends some copies and head into the horror armed with a rad buddy system.
White Noise 2 | Milkstone Studios – $9.99 on Steam, Xbox One and PlayStation 4
Now, White Noise 2 isn’t a new game and has been out for a couple of years now but it has one of the most enriching horror systems I’ve seen in a multiplayer scare title. Sure, I’ve talked about it before but it’s just so dang good! Putting you with a group of your friends, one person plays the monster and the rest of you have to race to find out a way to banish them to another realm and rid them from the playing field. Every character has different advantages and/or disadvantages and also special items that only they can use. Working together and staying together is the name of the game because if someone drifts away from the lantern light, you may just find them dragged off to some special dark corner without you. Make sure to bring a full squad of folks for this one because it’s a blast.
Deceit | Automaton Games – Free to Play on Steam
There’s no reason I can even understand how Deceit went free to play when it has such an awesome amount of work and effort put into it but when I think about it, I didn’t hear about it until it went free to play. This is because it gave a much needed boost to the series optics and let people try it out which garnered a lot more attention and I think it was the best thing that could’ve happened. Why?
Because this game is rad. Much like White Noise 2, you can play with a grip of your friends but this has a twist — you all start together and nobody is properly marked as a villain. Instead, someone will be chosen to be the enemy and you have to essentially deceive your way through the level and sneak out to eat up your friends when nobody is looking and no one can see it was you. This game had us screaming and laughing when not in fits of paranoia as we yelled at each other. Think of it like the highest stakes game of Clue you ever played. You will love it.
Try those three games out with some friends and let me know what you think! I’ll be hitting you up with even more horror game goodies as we slide into October, so don’t worry if you rock through these and need another fix! I’ll be quick to dive into enough that you’ll never run out!
