Wizarding is hard work, and doubly so when you are part of the most (in)famous guild in all of Earth-land. Lucy Heartfilia has long idolized the Fairy Tail guild with hopes of joining their ranks and a chance encounter with one of the guild’s members allows her the opportunity of a lifetime.
Lucy is a Celestial wizard, utilizing Gate Keys to summon celestial beings she has contracted with to help her in battle. Her summonings remind of Sailor Moon which immediately makes me squee with delight. As a new fan to the series I am excited to see how many keys she adds to her keyring and what other magical girl attacks are in her arsenal. (Easter Egg: Fans of manga-ka Mashima Hiro will notice that one of her minor celestials is a cross over from one of his previous manga series. I personally got a little giddy when I saw a familiar face in a new series.)
Accepted into Fairy Tail, Lucy soon finds herself teaming up with Natsu Dragneel, a dragon slayer wizard, and his companion Happy. Together they work on missions from the Request Board, and sometimes they even come home with money in their pocket. Downsides to working with Natsu include: his severe motion sickness, a penchant for using Lucy as a means to an end, and his constant bickering with guild mate and ice wizard Gray Fullbuster.
I hadn’t started watching or reading Fairy Tail back when it first came out. Now that I’ve started I’m finding myself enjoying it so very much. So much so that I really need to finish writing this post so I can get back to the show! Mashima’s done a wonderful job of creating a humourous fantasy adventure with some tender and very real emotional moments that remind you there is heart at the core of the series. If you’re a fan of Seven Deadly Sins, I have a feeling Fairy Tail is right up your alley. And there is plenty for you to watch, too. Did you know there are 277 episodes? That’s over 115 hours of missions and epic battles and hijinks to keep you entertained. The final season is set to air this sometime year, so if you decide to binge now you should be caught up by then.
