If it weren’t obvious from the amazing limited edition crate we just launched, we love us some Fallout. If you haven’t gotten deep into Bethesda’s hit gaming franchise, let me give you some details and fun little tidbits about everyone’s favorite post-nuclear video game. Let’s get into it!
1. Bethesda had hopes to release Fallout 3 on October 23rd, to coincide with the date the nuclear bombs dropped in the game. Didn’t work out and the game actually released a week later than they would’ve liked.
2. Those Bibles you find in Fallout: New Vegas are actually written by Chris Avellone. Loved them? Check out his game Pillars of Eternity. It’s chock-full of his genius!
3. Med-X in the game, which helps reduce the damage you take, was originally just ‘Morphine’ but executives decided that may be a little too real and didn’t want to give people any false and dangerous ideas with such a powerful real life drug.
4. Courtney Cox, of Friends fame actually worked for Bethesda Softworks in the 80’s. Later on, she’d actually host the Fallout 3 launch party! Since Matthew Perry, her co-star in Friends, was such a fan of the series — he was asked to voice Benny from Fallout: New Vegas. No wonder you 90’s kids love these games so much, right?
5. When you launch off a Fat Man Nuclear Catapult, a bell rings out and not without coincidence, that is the same bell that announces lunchtime at the Bethesda offices.
6. That adorable baby you hear at the beginning of Fallout 3 is none other than Todd Howard’s son. Howard, if you didn’t know, is the Producer and Director of Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Skyrim and Fallout 4. He’s kind of a big deal.
7. There are several Easter Eggs in regards to Blade Runner in Fallout 4. We won’t expand on them much because spoilers for Blade Runner, which you should for sure watch before the sequel hits in the fall, but definitely check out that Noodle Shop in Diamond City for a quick wink and a giggle.
8. Codsworth, the first companion you get in Fallout 4, actually has 1000 English names in his vocabulary. This is so that, if you put a name in that he recognizes, he can easily call you by it. If your name is not recognized or is possibly coarse language, he simply calls you ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’ depending on the gender you chose at the start of the game.
9. Fallout games are filled with surprise voice actors who you’d never expect to hear. In fact, if you go meet up with Takahashi in Diamond City while playing Fallout 4, you may be surprised to find out that’s Shinji Mikami who created Resident Evil. Not familiar? How about Wil Wheaton in Fallout 3? Trust me, these games are geek gold when it comes to their stars.
10. If you’re finding ‘Sugar Bombs’ boxes lying around, just know that’s a nod to Calvin and Hobbes. Even Tigers and little kids need to have a healthy breakfast in the Wasteland.
