The theme for May 2017 was Guardians, and here’s a look at some exclusive behind the scenes action of our latest theme video!
Finding a space that could accommodate not only the interior of a space ship’s living quarters, but also that of a cargo bay was the first challenge our crew had when scouting for the theme video. Luckily we found a place in Canoga Park called Remmet Studios that not only had an airplane fuselage, but was situated inside of a warehouse, allowing us to not only build inside the plane, but outside as well. Our incredible Production Design team consisting of Production Designer Paul Bianchi, Art Director Jo Crandall, and Art Production Assistants Justine Zins and EJ Lewis went to work making two seemingly inconspicuous locations look like that of a retro space ship interior.
One of the main challenges of the film shoot was working on stunts and effects while simultaneously working in a small space. In the pre-vis leading up to production, our stunt team – lead by Swordfights Inc. owner, Brian Danner – practiced in the Loot Crate parking lot; allowing them much more space for rehearsal. However, upon filming, the team quickly realized that they had to re-think their blocking. The chaos of the space worked in their favor, as it created a much more high-stakes environment for the two characters, Carl and Denny.
Music was a major motivator for this project, and it was imperative that we matched the tone of the song with the visuals. Screenwriters Jamie Parslow and Stephen Kramer Glickman worked closely together to ensure that they kept the integrity of the song intact while also providing a strong comedic backbone. This is where casting became an important factor. Jake and Sam Lewis fit perfectly into this world and brought their unique and dynamic selves into the fray – ultimately enhancing the story, especially when playing opposite Stephen Kramer Glickman.
