For August, the KINGDOM Loot Pins DLC is for the new MOBA Gigantic, developed by Motiga and published by Perfect World Entertainment. By activating your Loot Pin, you’ll unlock the powerful wizard Mozu with a Loot Crate exclusive skin, as well as some other goodies to help you in your quest for victory!
We were lucky enough to speak to the Senior Concept Artist at Motiga, Devon Cady-Lee, about the game.
How would you describe the art style of Gigantic? It’s a very unique vector style in the MOBA space.
When we set out to make an art direction guide for Gigantic, we think about three points in particular with every design; bold, focused and charming. Charm is important to make each hero feel like a relatable character, good or evil, with a unique personality and quirks. Bold, in the sense that we were not going to be afraid of crazy proportions and colors and make each hero’s silhouette distinct from one another, which is important in a PVP game. However, focus is important to make sure that these bold designs serve the purpose of the hero’s charm and do not clutter them or seem without purpose.
What are your primary influences on the character designs of the heroes featured in Gigantic? Who are your biggest influences?
Our influences for character design come from a variety of sources. Personally I draw a lot from my childhood in the 80’s/90’s for ideas, especially from cartoons and toys that I had. Toys and figurines are definitely a big influence on the bold, clean shapes we try to use. When we balance our characters against our environments we look a lot at animated movies, like Ghibli films, to contrast the hard-cut clean look of the heroes against the softer rendered backdrops.
What’s your favorite character, and why?
I will always have a soft spot for Tyto because he was my first hero, but other than mine I think I dig Xenobia because I’m really into tentacles. Also, her life-drain support niche is one of my favorite roles to play in PVP.
When you play Mozu, what are her most valuable skills in battle?
Let me preface by saying that I’m not a Mozu expert or a designer, but when I run Mozu I think learning when and how to use her Magic Door teleport is really important, both offensively to get picks and defensively to avoid getting picked. I also almost always run Reverse Polarity (projectile reflect) on Vortex to combat other ranged characters on the enemy team, unless they are very melee dominant.
What are the best items to watch out for that I can receive from a boost?
Boosts are a great way to level your account rank and crowns, which are a faster way to unlock the creatures and heroes you want. You can also draw cards faster to help you complete sets.
If you could see one character become a figure, which one would it be and why?
I think my favorite figures would also be my favorite heroes, but an Aisling figure with a light-up Cador would be sweet! I also wouldn’t mind some of the Minions on a summon point stand. 🙂
