Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch debuted on the PlayStation 3 as a new JRPG collaboration between Level-5 and Studio Ghibli. Released in North America on January 22, 2013, the story focused on Oliver, a young boy who sets out on an adventure to save his mother. He travels to the Second World and with the help of newfound friends and creatures known as Familiars fight at your side. This was followed by Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom in March of 2018, with a new protagonist and set hundreds of years after the events of Wrath of the White Witch and saw some changes in gameplay compared to the original.
The script for the Ni no Kuni movie will be handled by Akihiro Hino, president and CEO of Level-5 games, who penned both Wrath of the White Witch and Revenant Kingdom. While Studio Ghibli is no longer has a hand in Ni no Kuni, there are some people associated with the studio who are still involved. Joe Hisaishi will once more compose the score for the movie, and Yoshiyuki Momose (storyboarder for Pom Poko and Only Yesterday) will be directing the film.
