Dandy. Space Dandy. Leader of the Aloha Oe, this well-coiffed lady’s man travels throughout the galaxy in search of unregistered alien beings that he can turn into big bucks. With him, his trusty robotic companion, QT, and his furry Betelgeusian friend, Meow. Their mission: to not starve to death.

When you see the name Shinichiro Watanabe, your mind either goes immediately to anime classic Cowboy Bebop or the wonderfully delightful Samurai Champloo. Both series are fan favorites with enticing story lines and levity where levity is needed. Space Dandy goes in a completely opposite direction; the 26 episodes have little continuity and range from zany and wild to surprisingly heartwarming.
Dandy’s #1 goal in life is to dine at every single BooBies restaurant in the galaxy. To do so, he’s decided to live as an alien bounty hunter. This means scouring the galaxy for unregistered alien beings he can turn in for big Woolongs. Half of the time what begins as a quick job to make pocket change or a hot lead on a high value bounty leads the Aloha Oe into trouble. Even more shocking is how no matter just how deep of a hole the crew digs themselves into they miraculously seem to come out of (most) every adventure unscathed.

As the Aloha Oe’s crew jumps from one misadventure to another, a space war is happening in another corner of the galaxy. And for some unknown reason, one side of this fight has sent the mysterious yet somehow vaguely familiar Dr. Gel (hard G) chasing after our bumbling hero. They see Dandy as the key to winning the battle. Just how important is our oppai-loving main man to the galaxy? You’ll need to watch Space Dandy and find out for yourself.

Space Dandy may not appeal to fans of Watanabe’s greatest hits, but for those of you with a love of over the top series with crude humor, I highly recommend checking this one out. May it give you some proper belly laughs much the same as I experienced.
